1.0 out of 5 stars A Costly 12 Week Nightmare, May 10, 2012

In the past six years, I purchased six different electrical grass trimmers for my parents. They ranged from cheap $49 Sears closeouts to the $159 Stihl FSE 60 - the top-rated unit by many professional reviewers. All were horrible products. Many were cheaply constructed and lasted a few months after the expiration dates expired. The Sears models were useless - the strings kept clogging up. The Stihl FSE 60 was under-powered and did not cut grass evenly. It did have a two year warranty, but this was totally meaningless when executed after six months. The repair shop blamed the problems on user errors or some other technicalities that required the owner pay for repairs. At $60 per hour for labor and outrageous prices for imported German-made parts, it was cheaper to throw away the unit.

Looking for a replacement, I researched the internet and settled on the Greenworks 21102. Here is my report:

5.0 out of 5 stars The cutting head issue has been fixed, July 2, 2012

This review is from: Greenworks 21102 10 Amp 18-Inch Electric String Trimmer (Lawn & Patio)
I was a bit hesitant to purchase this item after all the bad reviews complaining about stripped bolts in the cutting head. However, I really wanted a powerful electric trimmer and figured I could always replace the cutting head if it failed.

I am happy to report that Greenworks has fixed the cutting head problem. As soon as I pulled the trimmer out of the box I disassembled the cutting head. THE ARROW ON THE KNOB IS WRONG. You must turn the knob clockwise to disassemble the cutting head and add string. It says that in the manual but I doubt most people read the manual. The plastic threads mentioned in other reviews have been replaced by a metal insert. The knob that retains the cutting head threads into one side of the insert and the other side connects the cutting head to output shaft of the gearbox.

I purchased this trimmer to replace a 29cc 4-stroke gasoline line trimmer. The gas trimmer is powerful but heavy and the vibration makes my hands numb after a... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Perfectly and has Attachment options, June 21, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Greenworks 21102 10 Amp 18-Inch Electric String Trimmer (Lawn & Patio)
For the price this one is better the the ryobi version that allows different attachments. It has more then enough power and takes down all the weeds and trims the edges of the lawn well. However the only reason i gave it 4 stars instead of stars is because the arrow on the bottom is confusing because it leads you to believe you have to turn the knob that way to change the string but in fact it is to tell you which way to wind the string so make sure you dont tighten it to the point of having to user pliers like i did to remove it. Just dont follow the direction of the the arrow for removing the string knob and you will be fine.
